The Nissaki Village

Nissaki covers a coastal line of over 3 kilometres, incorporating 3 beaches with crystal clear waters.

Once a small village, Nissaki has developed into a thriving modern resort whilst retaining its authentic Greek character as its location has discouraged most plans for the mass development of tourist accommodation and large hotels.

Nissaki’s main characteristics are the greenery, beautiful beaches and the serenity of the area. These are pleasantly complemented with a variety of activities relative to overall feel of the area. These activities include water sports, boat hiring, mountain bicycling, walking on the Nissaki – Corfu trail and exploring the various paths of Pantokrator mountain that lead to the abandoned village of Old Sinies, to the monastery at the top of the mountain, and the dozens of traditional taverns.

During the night small bars are open offering drinks and refreshments. The taverna’s are open all day long and offer primarily traditional food. There are not any night clubs with loud music etc. in the area but for those that seek this kind of entertainment the nearby destinations of Kalami, Barbati and Ipsos are not far by car or taxi.

Nissaki is very close to many known villages such as the bay of Agni, located just a few kilometres away, and the village of Kassiopi located a little further to the north.

Old Sinies Village

Many small roads and paths in Nissaki lead to the abandoned village of “Old Sinies”.

The village has many traditional stone made houses, churches, an old school and many wells, about 13, which the farmers still use for their goats, sheep and cows.

Mount Pantokrator

Nissaki lies under the Mountain of Pantocrator (the highest mountain on Corfu).

If you follow the paths after the old village of Old Sinies you will get to the top of Pantokrator mountain which is the highest point of the island (917m) and offers breathtaking views over most of Corfu island. On its bare and rocky peak you will find the old monastery of Pantokratoras built in 1347.

The area’s name, Nissaki (or Nisaki), means “Small Island” and as the older people say, it was the name of a small island which is now joined to the land. On top of this little island there is now a nice taverna overlooking the beach.

In the old times the people of Nissaki used to live in the abandoned village of Old Sinies, high above the sea and secured from the pirates incursions. The last inhabitants left Old Sinies in 1969.

If you have any questions in regards to the area or the available activities please don’t hesitate to ask. We’d be happy to help.
